The next 30 days, when new furniture arrives and the old couch has to go
Holiday sales put new couches, mattresses and appliances in homes through November. A 30-day plan to own the single-item haul-away calls that follow.
Every November, thousands of households in your area buy a new couch, mattress, washer or fridge on sale, and then realize nobody is taking the old one. Some stores offer haul-away for a fee. Many do not, or only for the exact item they deliver. The rest of the job lands on whoever shows up first on Google.
That gap opens over the next 30 days. Here is how to be ready for it.
Why this window is different
Your fall cleanout jobs are big and planned. Haul-away jobs are small and urgent. The new sofa arrives Thursday, the old one is in the living room, and the homeowner wants it gone before the in-laws arrive. They search "couch removal near me" or "mattress pickup" on their phone and book whoever answers fast with a clear price.
These are minimum-load or single-item jobs. They do not pay like a garage, but they fill the gaps in your route, they come with a review ask, and a lot of them turn into "while you are here, can you take the old dresser too."
Week one: make sure Google knows you do this
Most junk removal profiles list "junk removal" and stop there. People searching for single items often type the item.
- Add services by item. Couch removal, mattress removal, appliance removal, hot tub removal, piano removal if you do it. One line each in the services section of your Google profile.
- Add a single-item price. If you charge $95 to $175 for one bulky item in your area, say so. Price is the first question. The pricing guide covers how to present minimums without scaring off bigger jobs.
- Post a before-and-after. A living room with the old sectional, then without it. Caption it with the item and the town.
Week two: talk to the stores that do not haul
Make a list of independent furniture, mattress and appliance stores within your service area. The big chains often have their own haul-away. Many small stores do not.
Walk in on a weekday morning. Bring a stack of cards and a one-line offer: "When a customer asks what to do with their old couch, hand them this. They text the number and we pick it up within two days." Some stores will take a small referral fee per job. Others just want to give their customers an answer.
Three or four stores sending you two jobs a week each adds up fast in a short season.
Week three: get the phone and text right
Haul-away customers are comparing two or three companies on their phone at the same time. The first one that answers with a time and a price usually wins.
- Text-back on every missed call, within a minute. "Thanks for calling. Send a photo of the item and your ZIP and we will text you a price and a pickup window."
- Photo quotes by text. Most single-item jobs can be priced from one photo. That saves a site visit and closes faster.
- Weekend hours on the profile. Only 29.7% of junk removal listings show Sunday hours. If you run Sundays in November, say so. That is when furniture gets delivered.
The missed calls guide has the full text-back setup, and the calculator will show you what a missed call costs at your average ticket.
Week four: turn on a small ad, aimed tight
You do not need a big budget for this. A small Google search campaign aimed at item terms, like "couch removal," "mattress disposal" and "old fridge removal," runs cheaper than broad "junk removal" terms in many markets because fewer competitors bid on them.
Keep the radius tight, run it only when you can answer, and send the click to a page that shows the single-item price and a text button. The Google Ads guide covers the setup and the negative keywords that keep "free couch pickup" and "donate furniture" from wasting money.
Ask every single-item customer for a review
These are fast, friendly jobs. The customer is relieved, the room looks bigger, and you were in and out in twenty minutes. That is a great moment to ask. The median junk removal company on Google has 44 reviews. A season of quick haul-away jobs, each with a review ask, moves that number more than one big estate cleanout ever will.
What this month should produce
By early November you want: item-level services on your profile, a single-item price people can see, two or three store relationships, text-back on, and a small campaign running on item searches. Then the old-couch season, which runs through the end of the year, is a steady stream instead of a surprise.
